Just when you thought it was safe to put all your pension money on Toyota, they announce yet another massive recall that could severely weaken the company’s bottom line in the coming months.
An unbelievable 7.4 million cars will have to be fixed, according to a statement made today. Certain models of the Vitz, Yaris and Corolla all have a malfunction with their power window systems.
2.5 million of them are in the US, a further 1.4 million in China and again 1.4 million in Europe. Power windows don’t sound as dangerous as faulty accelerator pedals, but at the end of the day, a recall is a recall. Similar problems have also been reported by Honda with the CR-V crossover recently.
The two companies also find themselves in the middle of the anti-Japanese aggression spreading across China, which has severely affected sales in September. With demand there falling, a profit revision is likely to be announced.
Toyota spokeswoman Monika Saito tried to quench fears by saying the process to repair (the power window switch) is not an extensive one" in a statement today. The problem with the Toyotas is that the driver's-side switches are prone to having a "notchy" or "sticky" feel. If lubricant is applied by the owner in an effort to fix the problem, a fire can ensue.
