In this year’s recalls race, Toyota is still in second place after General Motors, but it seems to slowly catch up as another massive recall has been announced, involving nearly 2 million cars scattered around the globe that may suffer from brake and fuel system problems.
The first issues were reported back in 2010, but their frequency was not high enough to determine Toyota declare a new recall. However, it seems more and more of these issues have surfaced recently, finally pushing the company to take action.
As a result, 802,000 Toyota Crown, Crown Majesta, Noah and Voxy models overseas along with an unspecified number of Lexus GS units in the US are being recalled for a faulty seal in the brake master cylinder. The seals can let the brake fluid leak out of the system and renders it less effective.
The fuel system problem is basically being split in two. There will be 759,000 vehicles recalled worldwide (423,000 Lexus IS, GS and LS in US alone) for faulty fuel lines that could leak and cause a fire. Another recall will involve some 190,000 Toyota Corolla Rumion and Auris models in Japan that will have to fix a faulty evaporative emissions control unit.
As always, owners will be notified via first class mail to take their car to the nearest dealership and get the problem(s) fixed for no additional cost.
Taking a quick glance at the numbers, Toyota is quite far behind GM, which this year reached 30 million vehicles recalled. In the meantime, the Japanese company had to expand an earlier recall involving defective Takata airbags with 2 million additional vehicles. The biggest recall so far involved over 6 million cars across 30 models.
The company is not aware of crashes, fires, injuries or fatalities caused by the above-mentioned problems.
