We continue our journey into the weird and wonderful cars from the land of the rising. This is the prototype for their new Harrier SUV, which is a glorified Lexus RX. What, a Toyota is a glorified Lexus, shouldn’t it be the other way around? Not in Japan, since they don’t really use the Lexus brand all that much.
Automotive technology has evolved a lot, hasn’t it? Think your porsche is cool because you can match the body to the wheels? Think again, Toyota makes a whole different body for the same car.

The SUV we know as the 2013 Lexus RX hybrid is pretty much what we’re looking at here. But the Toyota version has a completely different front end which we actually like very much. The headlights are especially nice: LED brow at the top, indicators in the lower corner and beautiful lenses.

The grille is a piece of gloss transparent plastic. The new Harrier even has its own grille instead of Toyota’s and is going to be a hybrid with EV mode, just like the RX 450h.

From what we understand, this prototype is nearly ready for production and will be sold in winter 2013, most likely through the Toyopet dealer network in the country. No details are available about the powertrain yet, but there’s a chance they will use the smaller 300h with a 2.5-liter engine. After all, the RX is available with a much smaller engine in Japan.

Stay tuned for more unique vehicles from Japan!
