Toyota Camry and Prius Getting “More Emotional Design”

The problem with being on top is that everybody is looking for ways to overtake you. That’s how it is with athletes and especially the way automaker executives think. We’ve all seen how boring the 2012 Toyota Camry sedans look in lease car lots or huddled together at dealers. Despite this, the model is still not only the best selling midsize but also the best selling normal car in America.
With the next one, Toyota isn’t taking any chances, looking for more emotional design to accompany the reliability and efficiency everybody expects to get from a Camry.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Kevin Hunter, the Japanese brand’s US head of design, said that the Camry will have “more emotional, more impactful design. Camry’s taken some hits on styling" but "we need to create better design for Camry in the future.”

The Prius faces much the same challenges, trying to become a better version of itself as more and more hybrids arrive.

However, don’t expect these cars to be come as bold as a wide-eyed Hyundai. It’s simply a case of top executives realizing they’ve made cars that are too conservative. Kazuo Ohara, head of Toyota’s US sales, says they need to still be loyal to the 5 million people who own ca Camry, otherwise they might risk losing them.

Although the Bloomberg report wasn’t clear about this, we think these company officials are actually talking about a facelift that’s been rumored for 2014, not a completely new model.
