The all-new Auris isn`t the only new addition to Toyota’s European range of compact cars, as they have also launched a more practical offering, underpinned by the same chassis and basic running gear, called the Verso. The MPV is now available for order in the UK, with prices starting at £17,495.
For the base price, you get a the ‘Active’ trim level, powered by a 1.6-liter naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which drives the front wheels through a manual six-cog transmission. It comes packed with kit, including a four-speaker audio system, which is MP3 compatible, and offers aux-in and USB support, electric front windows, air-con, hill-start assist, electronic stability control and traction control.

Opt for the more expensive ‘Icon’ trim, and you gain 16-inch alloys, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, front seat aviation-style table and cupholder, Bluetooth connectivity, electric rear windows, a rear view camera, dual zone climate control and cruise control, to name but a few.

Top spec ‘Excel’ cars get bigger alloys, part-leather upholster, keyless entry and start, rain-sensing wipers, automatic bi-xenon headlamps, roof rails and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. This top model costs £23,445, and it can be had with either a 1.8-liter petrol engine, which is coupled to an automatic gearbox, or Toyota’s 2.0-liter D-4D diesel, which comes with a manual six-speed ‘box.

All but the most basic entry level cars get seven seats, which fold away into the boot floor when not in use, offering excellent load-lugging capacity, courtesy of Toyota’s ‘Easy Flat’ system. Deliveries are poised to start from the middle of January, 2013.
