In production since 2018, the fifth generation of the RAV4 will soon receive a plug-in hybrid option for the 2021 model year. Scheduled to premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 20th, the eco-friendly crossover is “the most powerful RAV4 yet” according to Toyota.
The Japanese automaker is keeping its lips tightly shut in regard to performance and fuel economy, but did mention an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery with enough electricity for an EV range of 30 miles. That figure works out at 48 kilometers if you were wondering, and chances are Toyota will offer the RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid in Europe as well.

Expected to feature more than 219 horsepower from both the e-motor and 2.5-liter Atkinson engine with four cylinders, the compact crossover stands out from other RAV4 variants with the help of specific badging, different bumper up front, and vertical fog lights. We couldn’t find the charging port in the teaser photo provided by Toyota, which means it could be located on the right-hand side of the vehicle, parallel to the fuel cap on the left.

The Prius Plug-In Hybrid features a similar arrangement, but the engine is a tad smaller at 1.8 liters. Also known as the Prius Prime, this model claims 25 miles of EV range and an EPA-estimated rating of 640 miles of total driving range when accounting a full tank of gasoline.

Pricing for the 2020 RAV4 Hybrid starts at $29,220 including the $1,120 destination charge, rising up to $37,750 for the Limited trim level. In other words, U.S. customers can expect to pony up a reasonable amount of green dollar bills for the addition of a charging port and plenty of e-range.

The presentation will be live-streamed on the Internet, and the crossover will be finished in Supersonic Red for the exterior palette. This color is expected to be added to the entire lineup, and if you were wondering, the 2020 model year already features a shade of red – Ruby Flare Pearl at $425.
