The Clinton Global Initiative Backs EV Adoption

Taking advantage of the sixth annual Clinton Global Initiative, a group called the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) announced a program aimed at increasing the adoption rate of electric vehicles on today's market.

The program is based on the reality of the 15 different models of plug-in electric vehicles which will become available by 2012 and the handful of electric vehicles currently getting ready to enter the market.

Most of the measures included in EDTA's program are educational in nature and range from a consumer-oriented website to international conferences. The group will also work with government and industry officials to help set up the best practices, standards and incentives which will turn electric vehicles into the biggest means of transportation of the years to come. The development of educational materials about electric vehicles for state and local officials, first responders, fleet operators, building owners, managers and retailers is also on the agenda.

“This initiative aims to speed the transition to electric drive and help us achieve the full environmental, economic and national security benefits of electrifying the transportation sector,”
said EDTA president Brian Wynne.

“Transportation accounts for one-third of the greenhouse gases produced in the U.S. Even with our existing electric grid, plug-in electric vehicles on average reduce emissions by one-third, with greater reductions achieved when vehicles are recharged from hydro-electric, nuclear or renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.”

The Clinton Global Initiative will be supporting the program announced on Tuesday by EDTA by urging and convincing foundations, companies and other organizations to support the initiative.
