Super Racer from Fishing Reel Company

Normally, there are some rules that generally apply to car building and designing that say you have to have a lot of experience in order to even start a concept. But in this world there are two kinds of people: those who follow rules and those who break them.

We’re thinking the guys over at Zebco didn’t get the memo with the car designing rules. You see, these guys regularly design fishing reels and other fishing-related articles and not some road-munching speed demon. But did that stop them from designing one of the meanest soapbox derby cars that ever existed on this Earth? Hell no!

They got their designers, engineers and machinists together and come up with this baby, the Zebco 63 Racer. What’s cool about this car is the fact that it was designed by these guys in secrecy, after work and in weekends. The team called itself Zebco Skunkworks because the project was so hush-hush.

What’s also cool is that the car’s sole purpose of existence was that of racing in the Great Sand Springs Soapbox Derby held in San Springs, Oklahoma. All the proceeds from the event go to charity and that’s what’s probably the coolest thing about the whole project.

And they didn’t just slap cardboard and wood together either. They used composite materials and an extruded aluminum frame not to mention cutting-edge computer design and it shows.

Event officials say that what Zebco have also manage to do is raise the bar higher for further events and teams entering them: “Zebco raised the bar on this, and next years Sand Springs Soapbox Derby. Hopefully, next year we will see some entries from the local aerospace companies in Tulsa. We put so much into this gravity racer that we would love to take on Lotus or Volvo since their cars inspired the Zebco 63 car,” said Brad Ruprecht, leader of the Zebco design team.
