Back in August of 2009, we reported that the famous ‘Star of India’, a one-off 1934 Phantom II 40/50 HP Continental 'All-Weather Convertible' custom made for the Maharaja of Rajkot, was being offered for sale at about €10 million ($14 million), making it one of the world’s most expensive cars ever.

After continued efforts to sell it on JamesList and under the auctioneer’s block in Monaco, the car has ended up in the hands of a new owner at the bargain basement price of $850,000 (€640,000). To add a bit of spice to the story, the car was actually bought by a close relative of the original owner.

Maharaja Mandhatasinh Jadeja from royal family in Rajkot paid the sum of INR3.22 million Rupees to an auction house in Canada, to bring back the Vintage Rolls Royce Car that was customised to the specifications of his grandfather.

The one-off 1934 Phantom II 40/50 HP Continental 'All-Weather Convertible' custom made for the Maharaja of Rajkot with coachwork by Thrupp and Maberley finished in saffron ochre with polished aluminum wings.

Mandhatasinh Jadeja, former prince of Rajkot, told the Times of India he planned to return the car to its homeland and give it to his father as a birthday present. His grandfather had sold it to a British collector back in 1968, and after passing through several other collections it’s currently on display at Canada’s Art Gallery of Ontario as part of the 'Maharaja: The Splendour of India’s Royal Courts' exhibition.

This very special luxury-car has seven-seater coachwork body and sports some unique touches to its paintwork. The bonnet and wings are made of polished aluminium and the rest of the body is of a saffron ochre finish, a shade that is considered a symbol of purity in India. The interior of the car is also made entirely in ochre, and the dashboard is marbled with saffron paste. Another unique feature is that the two fog lights follow the movement of the steering wheel.
