Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia have come quite a long way in the past few year, but none of their efforts have been in the supermini segment. In fact, since the Kia Rio was revealed in 2011, I don't think there's been any significant change. That's about to change, as the i20's replacement is coming.
This rival for the Ford Fiesta or Renault Clio has been developed with a very serious attitude, a sober German approach to practicality with only a pinch of design flair on top. You've got to remember, the Koreans have development centers in Frankfurt and even near the Nurburgring. We caught up with a development team working on three new i20s in Scandinavia. While they were parked outside a hotel, the very first shot of the new interior was taken.

Most of the front part of the interior was covered up, but we can show the rear seats, the blue and dark gray color combination and some snazzy rear door pockets. It also looks like there's a tall armrest in the front and powered windows at all corners.

Focusing their efforts on actual driving footage, our photographers were able to take the first shots of the door mirrors, which house LED indicators, a nice touch if you ask us. Just like the Kia Rio or Ford Fiesta, you will get power folding mirrors activated from the remote, but only on top-spec cars. Another nice feature we think is coming are the all-round parking sensors, which are great for drivers without full confidence in their parking skills.

The engine range should include 1.1 and 1.4-liter petrols, a 1.2-liter four banger and maybe a 1-liter turbo for the top-spec car, replacing the outdated 1.4-liter. That one is just an educated guess on our part, based only on the fact that we know a 1.0 T-GDI has been developed.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
