By now, after millions of post, you've probably learned that the second generation BMW X1 is a front-wheel drive based car. That doesn't mean it won't have all-wheel drive, but it will be like one of those systems that don't let you play the hooligan at intersections. Detect a little bit of wheel spin at the front and the torque will be sent to the back.
Let's try and find the best way to describe why BMW has done this. Imagine you're in Germany and you want to buy a small crossover-type SUV. The cheapest X1 is the sDrive18i with 150 PS, which starts at €27,950. But visit a Hyundai dealership and they will sell you the Santa FE for €29,990. It's much, much bigger and comes with all the boring stuff family buyers live: flat folding seats, 5 NCAP stars, easy phone connectivity and other doodads.

To fix these problems, BMW developed a new platform that it plans to use for over 10 cars, the new MINI being its first. The F48 uses that architecture, but it won't be the size of the MINI. In fact, it will be bigger in every way compared to the current model. It should also be lighter, more efficient across the engine range and more practical.

Our spy photographers caught up with the test team currently testing the next-gen BMW X1 in Northern Sweden. It's comforting to know that even though most folks will never push their cars to the limit, the X1 can easily deliver Santa's goodies next year.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
