Virtually without any sort of camouflage, this Audi prototype was spotted testing at night in Germany. What makes it a prototype? Well, it's not the usual A1 you buy right now.
For starters, a facelift seems to be coming, which to us indicates that Audi plans to keep the A1 in production at least two more years if not more. The A1 facelift features one major update: new headlights and taillights, the rest being pretty much the same.
This is actually not the A1 but the much more powerful S1. The hot hatch version of this supermini has been tested for over a year and will probably be ready to go on sale by next summer. Just like the S3 and VW Golf R share an engine, so too will the S1 and the Polo R WRC Street.
This means a 2-liter TFSI is under the bonnet of the S1.Just like the engine in the hot Polo, output will be 220 PS and 350 Nm of torque, though tuners will have a blast taking it to 300. We assume both manual and S tronic gearboxes will be available, both with 6 speeds. However, quattro all-wheel drive might be skipped for the first time, since the platform wasn't really designed for it. If that upsets you than know at least that both a regular 3-door S1 and a longer wheelbase Sportsback will be available.
