The 2012 Mercedes GL SUV, which has been spotted a number of times, has now popped up a number of times this year, even in chilly Sweden. We’re not talking about the recent facelift, but a completely different model that will follow the German automaker’s current design philosophy.
But what we’re looking at is not the bog-standard SUV, but its hot GL63 AMG cousin that is expected to come to the fight packing a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 with around 540 hp and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque.
The vehicle is still heavily camouflaged, but bares the same sort of features as the new E-Klasse. According to the most reports, it will be underpinned by a stretched-out version of the current generation ML platform that showed its face in Frankfurt. The 2012 GL will feature LED daytime running lights on the bumper.
The AMG in its name means that a wider front bumper with big air scoops and huge five-spoke wheels are part of the equation. Round the back, we spot a set of four massive rectangular exhaust tips.
Expect to see the AMG-tuned GL-Class to come out early next year.
