BMW is leaping ahead with the development of new chassis configuration and powertrains for both the new 1-Series and the 3-Series, which combine to make up more than half of their sales. After the debut of the sedan model last year, we now have a fresh sighting of their mid-size convertible that will share the same platform but will likely be known as the 4-Series Convertible.
The drop-top with a folding metal roof will be known as the F33 internally and it looks like it will be slightly longer and wider than the current generation, just like the F30 sedan. Judging by the lack of production headlights, foglishts and taillights, it’s fair to suggest that the car will officially bow much later this year, most likely at the 2012 Paris Auto Show, though Los Angeles is a possibility.
The engine range will be borrowed from the 3-Series, meaning all the powertrains will use forced induction. The most powerful version will of course be the new M4 that will reportedly use a turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 derived from the V8 in the M5.
