Even if the company is still fighting for survival and gets ready to step under the ownership of Koenigsegg, SAAB goes further with its development plans and gets ready for the release of the next-generation 9-5. But until you'll finally get the chance to buy the new model, the Swedish manufacturer is doing heavy testing on the car, obviously with a lot of camouflage that covers the key parts of the car.
Just as we told you some time ago when we published the first set of spyshots, the 9-5 will be offered with a revised rear, similar to a coupe, with several styling elements to be sourced from the 9-4x BioPower concept. Additionally, the new generation will be heavier, taller and longer compared to the current model, with the wheelbase to be increased by around 14 cm.
The car is supposed to be a real challenge for already popular models, including Mercedes-Benz E-Klasse, Cadillac STS and Volvo S80.
As for the engines, the Swedish manufacturer will debut a wide array of powerplants, including a 2.0-liter turbo with 210 horsepower and a higher 2.8-liter V6 for European buyers. The United States will receive larger displacement engine, a 3.6-liter V6 already found on the Buick LaCrosse, through General Motors' remaining share in SAAB. The company will also introduce an efficient diesel configuration, as well as a hybrid that will arrive on the market a bit later.
The first public appearance of the new generation SAAB 9-5 is scheduled for the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with more details to surface in the upcoming months.
