Spheric Tech to Make Batteries Cheaper

One of the main disadvantages of manufacturing an electric vehicle today is the high price of the battery, a small detail which in turn affects the price of the vehicle. The company which will find a way to build batteries more effectively and cheaper than today will struck gold (material prices can currently reach up to $60 per kilogram).

A company claiming to be on the right track is Spheric Technologies, a business which specializes in selling... high-temperature microwave sintering systems. Spheric is also a company who says it has created a way of manufacturing batteries cheaper by using industrial microwave furnace systems.

The technology is said to be able to create lithium battery materials at a fraction of the current cost and much faster as well. According to the initial data, the usual 10 hours production time for lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) is reduced to 30 minutes thanks to the patent pending technique.

Called AMPS, the tech is in fact a microwave furnace configured for the production of LFP, offering computerized temperature programming in the 450-1600 degrees Celsius range. The furnace comes with adjustable temperature ramp-up rates and programmable hold stages and hold times.

"This provides system versatility that is required to process various materials; it's especially valuable for microwave assisted chemical synthesis of inorganic materials and battery electrode materials,"
said Karl Cherian, the man who made the research which led to the breakthrough.

Spheric currently has two patent applications pending, covering microwave techniques, material and technology for the synthesis of lithium ion battery materials.
