With everything going electric these days, we need to take a closer look at battery technology. The way we drive, we eat, we build, we exist. Whether that’s going to be through harvesting power the Sun is sending out there continuously or there are going to be other ways too, petrol will soon die. At least that’s what they tell us, and judging by all these gizmos this seems to be the truth.
Did you know that by the end of 2014, cumulative photovoltaic capacity increased by more than 40 gigawatts and reached at least 178 GW? That’s about enough to supply 1 percent of the world’s total electricity consumption. Official figures show the US is not that great at PV capacity, but still better than a lot of other countries.

Nevertheless, using the power the sun is sending to Earth is most likely the smartest thing to do. Luckily, with the solar panels getting better by the day, the technology to do it seems to get more and more approachable on a bigger scale. Take this gizmo that basically is a device that harvests solar power and sends it to a battery that then can charge your gadgets.

Available for purchase at Hammacher Schlemmer, the solar backup battery kit has a USB port through which you connect you smartphone or tablet. The device fuels an iPhone up to 44% and iPad up to 56% on a full charge. Meanwhile, it takes two hours to fill up the solar charger’s internal battery.

Being slightly larger than a hockey puck, it’s small enough to carry with you everywhere you go. And for a $70 price tag we think it’s noteworthy.
