When BMW came out with the 30 Jahre Anniversary M5 the world stopped for a moment. It’s not that it showed never before seen specs but it was the most powerful production car ever made by the Bavarians. That rule also applies to limited-edition models, in case you were wondering.
That wasn’t all though. It was also the fastest car they ever manufactured, going from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds which is more than impressive for a rear-wheel drive car that weighs almost 2 tons.

But no matter how good things were looking on paper, there was that last item on the specs lists that never gave me comfort: the weight. For sportscar to weigh that much is absolutely mad but it is understandable to some point considering that this is a sedan that offers comfort for up to 5 people after all.

However, it is absolutely incredible what wonders the team at the M division worked to make this car as agile as it is. With all of its shortcomings, the M5 30 Jahre edition is incredible, having a revised suspension, new diff at the back and a lot of other tidbits to rely on so that it can surge forward with audacity.

The guys from EVO pitted this thing against a much lighter and less powerful model that was also coming from BMW’s rank: the BMW M4.

If the M5 weighs 2 tons and has 600 HP and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal, the M4 weighs around 1,600 kg (3,527 lbs) and has 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) to rely on. How important is weight after all?

Well, we’re all about to find out which one is faster around the track they tested the duo on. The thing is, it is all a matter of driver skill and the circuit you race on.

If it’s a technical one, with a lot of twists and turns, the lighter car will win it every time but if we’re dealing with a track that has long straights, the number one spot will go to the more powerful contestant.

In this case, we have a pretty good mix between the two. Therefore, the challenge is really interesting to see. No, we won’t spoil it for you, just check it out for yourself and let us know if you were surprised.
