Schumacher Will Test GP2 Car at Jerez, This Week

Michael Schumacher's preparations for the return to Formula One racing will begin sooner than everybody else's, as the German will reportedly take the wheel of a GP2 machinery later this week for a maiden testing session at the Jerez circuit.

According to Switzerland's Blick and Germany's Bild publications, the International Automobile Federation already agreed to the test, which is likely to get off as early as tomorrow. The testing session will last for 3 days, a period of time in which Schu will get reacquainted with the driving of a single-seater on a regular F1 testing circuit.

The FIA currently prevents the teams from testing their past or current cars prior to the February 1st deadline, but since we're talking about a GP2 test, the 41-year old German has all the freedom in the world to go ahead with the planning. The car will reportedly be provided by Super Nova Racing.

Several rumors appeared during the course of December that Schumacher will first test a GP2 car prior to signing his deal with Mercedes GP. The test was supposed to take place on the Abu Dhabi race track, but eventually never happened.

Schumacher's first proper test of a Formula One car will happen during the Valencia testing on February 1st – although we're yet to find out if he or teammate Nico Rosberg will get the first chance to drive the Mercedes-Petronas RB1 – in the first official test of the off-season. Most of the Formula One contenders will be there 3 weeks from now, so Schu must be at his best by then. And this week's test is a clear evidence that he will do whatever it takes to get back in shape for the start of the season.
