Schumacher Expects Race Wins in 2011

Michael Schumacher's comments when asked about the upcoming campaign have gotten a bit more optimistic following the last group test in Barcelona. And we can all guess why. The 7-time world champion topped the timing reports at Circuit de Catalunya last weekend and suddenly his prospects for 2011 have become a lot more encouraging.

If the German driver had stated before the off-season testing period that Mercedes will not challenge for race wins in 2011, but stick with hopes for podium finishes, not the 42-year old has updated those views to something a bit more close to Mercedes' expectations for the new season.

I am confident that we can compete for podium finishes, and I am hopeful we can fight for victories at some of the races,” said Schumacher, who insisted however that the Barcelona test last week did not offer a real picture of how competitive some teams are or aren't ahead of the season opening Australian Grand Prix, in an interview with Mercedes GP's official website.

The data I have seen over the winter had been quite encouraging, but then we all know that the realities of data and the race track can be quite different. (...) We will only see the truth once the season gets underway, so I can hardly wait to go to Melbourne to finally see what the real picture is,” added the German driver.

Furthermore, he also said that the feeling within the team is more positive as compared to last year, when he returned to the series following a 3-year absence and had to get reacquainted with the realities and new elements of F1 racing.

I know much better which areas to work in. I am much more familiar with the team and we have a great group of very skilled and dedicated people. I enjoy what I do, I enjoy working with Mercedes, and I have never regretted my decision to return... if that is what you wanted to ask next!” he added.
