Sauber Sign Pedro de la Rosa for the 2010 Season

No, it won't be Giancarlo Fisichella the driver to join Kamui Kobayashi in the 2010 starting lineup of Sauber F1 Team, but another Formula One veteran, namely Pedro de la Rosa. Although recent reports have suggested that the Spaniard is set to test McLaren's MP4-25 car during the first day of the Valencia test (on February 1st), Sauber today confirmed the Spaniard will drive for his team through the 2010 campaign.

Pedro has spent many years working for a top team at the highest technical level. We as a team stand to gain from his experience, and the same goes for young Kamui,” said Sauber, according to the team's latest press release.

The combination of a seasoned racer and an up-and-coming young driver has repeatedly proved a very fruitful one. I don't expect either of them to disappoint in 2010.”

Of course it is also crucial that we provide them with a decent car; I feel positive about our in-house progress on that front too. We were able to continue work on our 2010 car as scheduled throughout the recent period of uncertainty,” added the Swiss team owner.

I always firmly believed I would be given another chance as a team driver. Since the number of test drives were radically reduced, this was what I was working towards. I'm really excited about the season with Peter Sauber's team, which has been a solid fixture in Formula 1 ever since 1993,” added the Spaniard.

In recent days, Giancarlo Fisichella was also linked with the vacant seat, as part of Sauber F1's engine deal with Ferrari for the 2010 season of Formula One. However, prior to Pedro de la Rosa's confirmation today, the Swiss official made it very clear that no one will influence him in his decision to name the team's second driver.

The announcement did not suggest the period of time for which the contract was signed. It is therefore expected that De la Rosa will test Sauber's 2010 challenger at the Valencia meeting, as the Swiss outfit previously confirmed they will launch their car a day before the testing session kicks off.
