Humans have always been fascinated with bipedal walking, how it works and how it is achieved with such ease. There have been many attempts over the years, most of which have come from Japan, and most have been successful. Now, Samsung’s robotics division have just presented their latest humanoid robot, Roboray, at a tech show in Portugal, called IROS 2012.
It has been in co-development with the Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) since 2004, and it is an evolution of the ‘Mahru’ robot, shown in the video below. However, thanks to new leg joints, it gains even more mobility over the previous model, giving it close to human walking capabilities.

Now, despite being more advanced than previous robots made by the company, it is still unable to run, like the robots developed by Honda or Toyota. It stands 150 cm tall, weighs 62 kg and features a total of 32 joints (not including the finger). The next step is for the development team to develop face and speech recognition tech, in order to ‘bring it to life’, if you will, a little bit more.
