Richard Petty Motorsports Stays in the Sprint Cup Series

The financial drama which Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM) went through these past few months will not stop the team from competing in the premiere NASCAR series next year. The team announced today it will continue the racing programme next year, but will field two cars instead of four.

The two vehicles to be used by RPM will be driven by A.J. Allmendinger (driving the No. 43) and Marcos Ambrose (behind the wheel of the No. 9 Ford). The decision puts to rest the rumors which claimed that RPM will completely give up racing next year.

“Richard Petty Motorsports has completed its restructuring process and is now in the process of moving forward. RPM will shift from running four cars to two in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and that is never an easy process for the people involved,” the team said in a statement.

Problems for the team started earlier this year, after George Gillett decided to sell English soccer club FC Liverpool, which he owned together with Tom Hick. By selling it way short, Gillett and his team were left in disarray.

According to reports, Gillett owes $20 million to Ray Evernham and several other millions to Roush Fenway. Other unconfirmed debts are also said to weigh heavily with the team.

“We are very fortunate to have an extremely loyal family of partners and are looking forward to the future,” said Petty, who failed to go into the details of a possible deal which led to the last minute save, even though partial, of the team.
