Greed, for lack of better world, is good! Those words belonged to one Gordon Gekko, but they could just as well have come out of any German industrialist or corporate big wig. Mercedes is steadily losing its old image and is moving into ever diversifying markets with their products.
BMW has had excellent results with the X1, beyond anybody’s imagination, so why shouldn’t Mercedes have a go at making one of these luxury compact crossovers.
Indeed, the decision to build one has already been made, and it will reportedly be called the GLA. This is the new naming system from the German automaker, where all off-roaders will start with “GL”, the “A” indicating this is the smallest of the bunch.
The platform will be shared with the new A- and B-Class, as well as an upcoming small sedan and a yet unknown product.
The SUV will not be too big, only about 110mm longer than the A-Class. And it will be a direct rival for the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
