Don’t adjust your screens, that is not the latest Lotus mid-engined model, but a rendering of the next generation Audi R8. To be honest, we’re still waiting for the facelift, which should debut early next year and bring with it a number of changes, like slightly more powerful engines and a double-clutch gearbox.
So when CAR Magazine came forth with a full report on the second, all-new generation of R8, we were really blown away. To sum up this model as simply as possible, it’s going to be a pure, all-out supercar. For whatever reason, the R8 isn’t targeting the 911 any more, and all bets are off with regards to the market overlap with its Lambo brother.
The current R8 was a pioneer of sorts in the use of aluminum to save weight, and the next one will take things even further with carbon fiber. This will see limited use, just enough to contribute to the total weight dropping by 100 kg (220 lbs).
We think the new R8 is only in its early development stages, and Ingolstadt has been testing a number of other powertrain options. Right now, it looks like the V8 and V10 will still be used, but the new twin-turbo 4.0-liter with 600 hp is also a good fit. The world really needs a new mainstream turbocharged mid-engined supercar right now!
