Prost: Tire Issue Only an Excuse for Schumacher

Four-time world champion Alain Prost criticized 7-time world champion Michael Schumacher for his lack of “humility” when telling the media that his main goal for the upcoming 3 years of career is to bag an 8th F1 title. Returning to the sport after 3 years of absence, Schumacher failed to make a single podium appearance this season, while also recording his worst race classification in career, P15 in Valencia.

Prost believes a more realistic goal for Schu's return would have been to help his much younger teammate Nico Rosberg develop into a title-winning racer.

He should have said he was coming back to help Rosberg, or Mercedes in its first year, or his friend Ross Brawn – it would have been easier for him,” said Prost in a recent interview with French newspaper L'Equipe.

The former F1 ace himself took a short vacation off racing back in 1992, before returning to the sport a year later and clinching his 4th and final F1 crown. As far as Schu is concerned, Prost believes 3 years outside F1 is too much to be able to return to racing with the same strength.

“It may have been a lack of humility, but I think he saw himself as more powerful than that. For me, it's just a question of age. I think the tires are just an excuse, because Schumacher always adapted to any sort of car. It was his great strength. It's just not possible to return to the top after being away for three years at that age. It's a matter of physiology,” he added.

Prost is not the only man to comment this way, as his words are echoed by a man who has actually discovered Schumacher's talent back in the mid-90s. Flavio Briatore, with whom the German won 2 world titles at Benetton, thinks his former protege will not return to stardom anytime soon.

We know the Schumacher of Benetton and Ferrari. We know him as a super champion. It was not a right decision on his part to make a comeback. If he continues next year, it will be the same story,” said Briatore in an interview with the Times of India.
