In a rather surprising move, BMW seemingly decided to keep the prices for its only roadster intact for the 2016 model year variants. Unlike virtually every other car in its line-up, the entry-level Z4 sDrive28i Roadster will start at $49,250 before applying the destination and handling tax.
Admittedly, once you add D&H to it, the price does go up a bit compared to last year but that’s because the tax went up from $925 to $995. Other than that, a lot of the optional packages actually get a decrease in pricing, not to mention the added standard kit.
For example, the sport seats will become standard now on all models, including the entry-level sDrive28i. The Ivory White Burnt Sienna package will be $2,750 and includes Anthracite headliner, Ivory white and black Nappa leather and Fineline brown wood trims.
In terms of exterior paints, the 2016 models can no longer be had in Crimson Red. However, Melbourne Red Metallic doesn’t need to be ordered with the M Sport package anymore, for example while Valencia Orange Metallic doesn’t require the Hyper Orange package anymore. On the other hand, both these colors can’t be had with Coral Red Kansas Leather anymore and the same can be said about Sparkling Brown Metallic.
All of these changes do make sense as the car is heading towards the end of its production and its popularity has been going down lately, forcing BMW to rethink its strategy regarding it.
Rumors claim that there’s a replacement on the way and that it’s going to be developed in collaboration with Toyota. The one area of expertise where the Japanese could help out the most would be in the drivetrain department as the new Roadster will probably be hybrid. Until an official confirmation comes through, we’ll have to wait and see.
