Here’s the gist of what we are going to tell you in the following paragraphs: The German firm has just announced a new four-wheel drive version with 408 horsepower of the regular 911 GTS, available both as a Coupe and a Cabriolet. The two new gap-fillers for the product line-up will join the two-wheel drive GTS that has already been on sale since February.

Besides that extra ‘4’ you will get in the rear badge, most people will find it hard to spot the difference, but the most notable change that Porsche has brought is the increase in power for the 3.8-liter flat-six engine, which has gained an extra 23 hp thanks to some changes to the intake duct, taking the peak power output to 408 hp at 7,300 rpm.

Partly thanks to the car’s all-wheel drive system, the 0-62 (0-100 km/h) sprint is dealt with in 4.6 seconds or 4.8 seconds, in the case of the coupe and cabriolet models respectively. An extra 0.2 seconds can also be shaved off by opting for the extra PDK gearbox. By applying the principles of Porsche Intelligent Performance, the fuel economy of these new all-wheel 911 models is identical to that of the equivalent 385 hp 911 Carrera 4S models.

In terms of exterior design, the GTS offers gets a Sport-Design front apron, with a black painted spoiler lip, and deeper side skirts. Over the standard 4S, the model also adds sports seats as standard while 19-inch black RS Spyder alloys with a central wheel bolt add to the exterior’s appeal.

That might not sound very important, but what is significant is the addition of a rear limited slip differential and a switchable sports exhaust. There’s also that reflective strip at the back, which sets all models with AWD apart from the rest of the 911 range.

The 911 Carrera 4 GTS will go on sale in July 2011, priced from £83,145 (Coupe) and £90,024 (Cabriolet) in the UK. On the German market, the model will set you back €111,956 in the case of the Coupe and €122,071 in the case of the Cabriolet.
