People Are Calling This Le Mans Race Car the Best Lego Technic Kit Ever

We've been huge fans of the Technic series ever since we were kids. Okay, teenagers. Okay, some of us built them into our 20s instead of going out with girls like regular people do. But how can you resist joining a complex array of plastic parts into a working 24-hour race car featuring functioning gullwing doors and a V8 engine?

Technic kit number 42039 is considered by many to be one of the best. At $130 a piece, it's certainly expensive but so is that BB-8 droid we showed you a few days ago. There are two builds you can do with the package, this race car, and a 4x4. But somebody seems to have figured out a way to make a Grand Prix racer as well. Since there are no schematics for that, you'll need the second video below to build it.

This robust model has all the features of a real-life race car, including moving pistons, opening gull-wing doors, all-round independent suspension, working steering wheel, an opening front trunk and engine hood.

So why are we showing you a speed build video? Well, putting the Lego kit together takes time and patience. There are 1,219 pieces in total, and you can also upgrade the car with the 8293 Power Functions motor set (not supplied) to give you LED headlights and motorized doors.

After all is said and done, you will end up with a display piece that measures 3 inches (10cm) high, 18 inches (48cm) long and 8 inches (21cm) wide. Only your geeky friends will appreciate this, but that's not important.
