The incident took place on the M40 between Loudwater and Beaconsfield and caused the closing of two lanes for no less than nine hours.
According to The Daily Mail, an unnamed man was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage after trying to flee the scene and was chased by police with the help of a helicopter. None of the twelve passengers were seriously hurt, only one of them being sent to the hospital for possible spinal injury.
It's not exactly clear what happened on the bus, but it would appear that the driver, although injured in the assault, fought the assailant to regain control of the bus. He didn't manage to do so and the bus ended on its side. The passengers had to use the escape hatches in the roof of the bus to free themselves from the wreck.
“We would like to commend the driver for his brave actions in minimising what could have been a far more serious accident,” said a spokesman for the Oxford Tube, the operator of the bus.
"The driver received a shoulder injury as a result of the incident and has naturally been badly shaken by what happened. We have offered him our support as well as any professional counselling he needs,” the spokesman told The Daily Mail.
