Toyota is reading between the lines. The Crown is doing well in America so this must be taken advantage of. The carmaker is expanding the lineup and bringing to the market what most customers want: a crossover.
Toyota has just teased the upcoming model, which seems to be the production version of the Crown Estate concept, unveiled last year. From what we can see from the photo, we are dealing with a hybrid SUV. Not much left to guess in this department, claiming that the model will go “beyond what’s expected.” It is true, nobody expected a Crown SUV several years ago.

As for the rest, we can indeed only guess. And we can start with the font of the rear badging, which is the same as the one seen on the high-riding Crown sedan that Toyota introduced in 2022 as a replacement for the Avalon. The sedan is just one of the body styles that Toyota is planning for the Crown lineup, with the Crown Sport crossover, launched in Japan earlier this month, joining it as the second.

The way the photo is cropped lets us only see the letter C. We could go for the Camry, but we’ll stick with the Crown.

If it is indeed the Crown SUV that Toyota is teasing in the photo, one thing is for sure. The rear does not resemble the Crown Sport that is available on the Japanese market. But the taillights do resemble those on the Crown Estate concept.

Things are getting confusing the moment Toyota refers to the model as an Estate (wagon), even though it looks like a crossover SUV. A low-slung sedan and a typical SUV are in the cards for the near future.

The estate will only be available as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid in Japan, but we are yet to see what Toyota is preparing for the American market. From what the teaser photo shows, the PHEV will be there.

Therefore, we should expect the naturally aspirated four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine to work alongside an electric motor mounted on the rear axle for a total output of 340 horsepower (345 PS). Meanwhile, the hybrid brings along 231 horsepower. Both variants come with all-wheel drive. Toyota might also consider an all-electric variant.

The Toyota Crown Estate is 4,930 millimeters (194 inches) long, 1,880 millimeters (74 inches) wide and 1,620 millimeters (63.8 inches) tall, figures that would translate to generous onboard space.

With so many hybrid SUVs in the lineup, we are yet to see where the Crown will slot. In the caption of the teaser posted on Instagram, Toyota wrote "C u soon!" Most likely, "soon" means that the carmaker will reveal the upcoming model and details about it in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
