Ever wondered what would happen if you competed against yourself in [insert favorite cool activity here]? Don’t bother to answer that. Porsche has already done it in its latest commercial, except the piece is not about you. Instead, they’re using Maria Sharapova, Muhammad Ali and Magnus Carlsen (chess aficionados will understand). Oh, and a pair of 911 Carrera S models that engage in a bit of a drift battle.
We won’t write one more word on what goes on in the ad and that’s because the behind-the-scenes video you’ll find at the bottom of the page explains everything.

As it happens with most Porsche commercials, the fiction in the ad had a direct link to the badass engineering in the car. And yes, you adrenaline junkies, we’re referring to the drifting part.

One of our favorite things about the 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera and 911 Turbo is a piece of software dubbed Sport Mode. This is a feature of the Porsche Stability Management (PSM), one that makes the rear-engined coupe more eager to drift while still offering a safety net.

Since the world has finally understood drifting is a sport, sliding the inferno out of a car without crashing it has entered Porsche's repertoire. After all, it would’ve been a bit weird to see the world’s most motorsport-savvy automaker ignoring the art of steering with the throttle.

This goes beyond Zuffenhausen’s cars, as, for instance, their customer-aimed driving tuition programs also include sliding shenanigans.

Returning to the ad, this was directed by Mark Jenkinson and we have to admit the man knows a thing or two about telling the story of a go-fast machine. His portfolio includes ads for the Jaguar F-Type R, first-gen Audi R8 V10 Plus, and the SEAT Leon Cupra.

In a similar fashion to how Porsche designers don’t need to do anything since all 911s look the same, this guy seems to only direct commercials for cars that sell themselves. Well played Mr. Jenkinson, well played.
