You know us, we like talking about the 2012 Porsche 911 like we like drinking gasoline... That didn’t come out right, but something that looks likely to come out the way we like it is the new Cabrio version that follows the Coupe from Frankfurt.
We’ve stumbled across some very interesting schematics that were leaked thanks to German Car Forum. These reveal the inner workings of the convertible model’s soft-top. These show a semirigid structure to the design of the retractable roof. Instead of the soft fabric, the roof now has three sections that are stiffer and are covered over the top by the fabric.
We’ve looked over the design and have concluded that it’s the real deal, since the profile matches perfectly with that of the car that was spotted testing recently.
The schematic also reveal that the retracted roof does away with the rigid tonneau cover at the back.
A recent Car Magazine report confirms the semirigid roof and say that there should also be an optional sunroof that consists of a large tinted glass or aluminum panel that is placed on top of the roof. The configuration is supposed to be similar to that on the MINI Cabrio, but we’ll have to wait and see.
The canvas area is supposed to be remarkably weatherproof and is fixed permanently to the whole area of the first and fourth panel, the one with the glass. Porsche is probably going to say that the tightly stuck fabric allows the cabriolet to have the famous 911 roof design for the first time ever.
Porsche is expected to launch the new 911 Cabrio in the summer of 2012.
