France is not the only developed European country struggling with slow sales of new cars, as Spain is in a very similar situation. The Spaniards have reported a drop of 13.2%, which is only 0.7% better than the fall reported by the French - still, the number is quite alarming and proof that the European economy is shaky to say the least.
This is serious news, and it represents the lowest level ever recorded, since data collection began, in 1989. The 13.2% drop equates to around 700,000 vehicles sold in total, and as was the case in France, the drop is getting steeper, as December of 2012 was marked by a drop of 23% year-on-year.
Additional proof of the sorry state of the economy is the number of unemployed, which has reached the alarming number of 5 million, in December of last year. This year will be a difficult one for the whole of Europe, and especially important automotive producing nations, like Spain, which have based a large proportion of their economy on the manufacturing of automobiles.
