Nasim Sdn Bhd, the official distributor of the Peugeot cars in Malaysia, has announced it will increase exports of the locally-assembled 207 to Thailand soon. In an official statement made yesterday, it was also revealed that exports to Indonesia will follow in March.
This latest announcement comes after the initial batch of 44 units have been delivered to Thailand. But Peugeot has plans for a production run of 70,000 units of the model, which will also be sold in the Association of South East Asiatic Nations (ASEAN) region, in both left- and right-hand drive markets. Other regional right-hand drive countries where the 207 is earmarked for export include Brunei and Sri Lanka, but a few countries in Africa are also in the cards.
Nasim’s chief executive officer, SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, announced the company's export plans during a visit made by Marc Barety, France's Ambassador to Malaysia, to the Naza Automotive Manufacturing (NAM) plant in Gurun, Kedah. Barety was accompanied there by other members of the French Embassy and the Malaysian French Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
"This in turn will further establish Malaysia as Peugeot's hub for the region," he said.
The NAM plant also churns out the 308 and 407, and soon an all-new C-segment four-door model. Nasim has committed to produce 60,000 units of the upcoming Peugeot 308-based sedan, codenamed T73, over a five-year period that starts from 2012 and ends in 2016. Of that figure, about 60 percent would be set aside for export, compared to just 20 percent targeted for the 207 this year.
