NASCAR driver Jason Leffler was killed in a dirt track crash that occurred Wednesday night at a sprint car race at the Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey. According to ESPN, the 37-year-old driver was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.
Born in Long Beach, California, Leffler started his NASCAR career in 1999 and made 423 starts in the competition’s three national series, scoring three wins, 143 top tens and 19 poles. He also ran three races in the IndyCar Series.
"NASCAR extends its thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of Jason Leffler who passed away earlier this evening," NASCAR said in a statement. "For more than a decade, Jason was a fierce competitor in our sport and he will be missed."
Jason Leffler is survived by his 5-year-old son, Charlie Dean.
