NAS Joins Quest for Toyota's Evil Unicorn

The more, the merrier... After NHTSA and NASA itself, another investigation into the mysterious problem which accelerates Toyotas will be opened by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). So, we can now definitely say there are more agencies investigating the incidents than incidents themselves.

"We are determined to get to the bottom of unintended acceleration," said a very determined Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "For the safety of the American driving public, we must do everything possible to understand what is happening. And that is why we are tapping the best minds around."

NAS will delegate its best, the National Research Council (NRC), to lead the hunt for the Cause (for lack of the better word, from now on we'll refer to what lies behind Toyota's accelerator problems as the "Cause"). While NASA's inevstigation will last some 18 months, NAS will move a bit faster and claims they'll have something ready within 15 months.

Because of Toyota, all manufacturers are now under scrutiny. NAS and NRC will strip, rip and put under the microscope all manufacturers, to find possible sources of unintended acceleration, including electronic vehicle controls, human error, mechanical failure and interference with accelerator systems.

Imagine what will happen should all this massive show of force is in vain. What if they find it's not the cars to blame after all, but the drivers? Because, despite all the acronyms taking part in the investigation, no one really proved or has any idea how to prove unintended acceleration happens. Not even David Gilbert...

Yet, they won't give up.

"We are bringing the best minds and talents to resolve this issue," said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. "We will not rest until we have identified and addressed any potential vehicle-related causes of unintended acceleration."

Meanwhile, Toyota cars stopped accelerating on their own...
