Munchi's to Make 2009 WRC Debut in Cyprus

Munchi's Ford World Rally Team are preparing to make their first appearance in the 2009 World Rally Championship and they couldn't have asked for a better debut than the mixed-surfaced Rally Cyprus. Entering the event for Munchi's will be Argentine driver Federico Villagra, who will compete on a Ford Focus RS WRC alongside co-driver Jorge Perez Companc.

“It feels like it has been a long time since my last event,” said Villagra on series' official website, as he'll be returning to world rallying following his last outing for Munchi's in Rally Japan, 2008. Also, his past experience in the Cyprus rally dates back to 2005, when he finished the event on a disappointing 27th place.

“Cyprus is going to be very interesting. The stages are very long and it is going to be a new experience driving on different surfaces in the same rally. I think it is also going to be very hard on the brakes and it will be tough mentally and physically,” added Villagra.

Thanks to FIA's new rule book, Munchi's eight-round schedule with a single car effort this season will be enough to secure the team a place in the manufacturers' classification. Although Villagra might be accompanied by a second car on 2 or 3 occasions throughout the year, Munchi's will basically rely on him to bring home the “big points” in 2009.

“It is great to be taking part in eight rounds of the WRC this season and I'm very happy to be back racing with Jorge. We have had a really good test and I am looking forward to the rally,” said Villagra.

As announced earlier this year, all teams will use only gravel-spec Pirelli tires throughout the Cyprus weekend, despite the fact that the Friday stages will be ran on asphalt. Aimed to reduce costs for the teams during Rally Cyprus, the measure will likely lead to more spectacular driving for the fans but far more difficult stages to master by the WRC drivers.
