Mercedes E-Drive Presented During TechDay

This weekend, German manufacturer Mercedes Benz will bring together, perhaps for the first time in one location, it's entire lineup of electric vehicles. The manufacturer will be presenting during the TechDay the A-Klasse E-Cell, the B-Klasse F-Cell and the Vito E-Cell van, as well as the E-Drive modular system which made them possible.

The E-Drive is a manufacturing solution which allows Mercedes to use a wide range of electric vehicles with battery or fuel cell. This means that the carmaker can save both time and money to allow it to produce the vehicles in big numbers and at affordable costs.

"Customer benefit is our top priority when developing sophisticated electric mobility,"
said Thomas Weber, Daimler member of the Board of Management for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

"The success of e-mobility stands and falls on customer acceptance, which essentially depends on three factors: everyday practicality combined with driving enjoyment, economic efficiency, and a charging and refuelling infrastructure for power and hydrogen. This is why we adopt a comprehensive approach to this topic, the aim being to offer a convincing, complete solution."

Mercedes-Benz is planning to become one of the biggest players on the electric vehicle market. Recently, the carmaker announced its plans to bring the B-Klasse F-Cell to the US as its first fuel cell powered electric car produced for the local market.

Mercedes-Benz chose to create its EV based on the chemical reaction between oxygen and hydrogen. A fuel cell system generates electricity from this reaction, with the only byproduct of the process being water. The B-Klasse F-Cell has an operating range of 250 miles (400 km). The power and range are provided by a fuel cell system which comprises a 136 hp electric motor (290 Nm of torque) with cold-start capability.
