Mercedes Deny Brawn Alliance for 2009 Title

If Sebastian Vettel relies on the help of his teammate Mark Webber in the title fight this year – as the Aussie admitted he would help his teammate in his quest for a world title – Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello seem to be backed by a whole team, namely McLaren Mercedes.

According to the latest rumors in the F1 paddock, it seems the Woking based team are considering helping out their fellow countryman in the closing stages of the 2009 season, in order for Brawn GP to secure both constructors' and drivers' titles. The former might be already a closed business for Ross Brawn, but the drivers' crown is still up for grabs with 2 races to go.

Mercedes is currently supplying engines to both Brawn GP and McLaren, while being official backers only for the latter. However, having a Mercedes-powered car top both standings in 2009 seems more and more appealing to the German manufacturer, especially since they are likely to switch their support from Woking to Brackley in two years time.

Needless to say, Mercedes' motorsport director Norbert Haug denied the rumors, insisting that nobody made any alliances for the closing stages of 2009.

Absolutely not. Everyone drives their own races, just as before,” Haug was quoted as saying to the German tabloid Bild.

On the other hand, however, Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner publicly asked the Brawns and the McLarens to race correctly in Brazil and Abu Dhabi. Sebastian Vettel is currently 16 points behind Jenson Button in the standings and needs two wins out of the next 2 races in order to strip the 29-year old Brit from a much-expected world crown.

We hope that everything that happens is done correctly,” said Horner, according to the same Bild tabloid.
