Even though the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA has just been introduced onto the market, the German automaker is already pondering on moving the compact’s production from Hungary all the way to Mexico.
Mercedes-Benz won’t be crossing the Pond just now, but only before the second-generation CLA will arrive - reportedly in 2018. Although the move is seen as optimal by Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche, the automaker doesn’t want to build a new facility from the ground up, but use a Nissan plant as part of a joint venture with the Japanese company.
Mercedes-Benz’ arrival in Mexico could also spawn a CLA-based model under the Infiniti badge, with Nissan ready to enlarge the factory to build such a derivative vehicle.
Our guess is that Mercedes will end up moving production of the GLA to Mexico as well. It would be the next logical step since the compact crossover, scheduled to hit US dealerships later this year, uses the same platform as the CLA.
