Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Countdown Begins

Perhaps one of the most looked-forward revelations of 2009, the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG is getting ready to be unleashed at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. Until then, the German manufacturer has made available the SLS AMG dedicated website and, as you can see by following this link, the countdown has begun.

Of course, most of the details surrounding the new Merc are known, as they were released, little by little, by Mercedes. Yet, despite miles and miles of unofficial spyshots, official spyshots and official videos of the SLS, the complete look of the car is yet to be revealed.

The car packs an AMG 6.2l V8 powerplant that generates 571 horsepower (420 kW) at 6800 rpm and a maximum torque of 650 Nm at 4,750 rpm. It propels the gull-wing from naught to sixty in 3.8 seconds, with maximum speed going as high as 315 km/h (195 mph).

The SLS will also be available with what may very well be called the mother of all electric drives. With four electric motors pushing and puling the car forward, the electric SLS AMG will be about as powerful as its conventional brother: 392 kW (525 hp) and a maximum torque of 880 Nm.

On the inside, Mercedes says the SLS "combines lightweight construction with dynamism and high emotional appeal." Access to the interior is done via gull-wing doors, to reveal a “aviation engineering” design theme on the wing-shaped dashboard, The center console is designed in "the style of a jet’s operating console", with four jet-engine-like air vents sticking out of the dashboard.

autoevolution will be attending the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions.
