Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Downsizes to a V6 Engine with the New S400 Coupe 4MATIC

It was somehow fitting that the one true luxury coupé in Mercedes-Benz’s range only came with V8 and V12 engines, but that depends heavily on whom you ask. While the brand’s fans will immediately agree with you, an environmentalist might shake his head in disbelief, wondering how some people still don’t understand the gravity of the situation.
We’re 100 percent positive they’re not the reason behind Mercedes-Benz’s decision to launch the S400 Coupé 4MATIC, but the fact that a smaller, less powerful engine would tempt a new portion of the public towards its two-door luxury car. Especially since the addition of this engine also lowers the acquisition price considerably, the S400 Coupé now dropping just under the €100,000 mark in Germany (19% VAT included).

With the closest model - the S500 with rear-wheel drive - costing €23,000 more, that opens up the possibility of ticking a lot of boxes on the configuration list for those who have €123,000 to spend and value technology and comfort more than engine power and the number of cylinders.

Not that the S400 Coupé 4MATIC is in any way short on power. The three-liter bi-turbo V6 engine develops 367 hp and a maximum torque of 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) from as low as 1,800 rpm. If those numbers sound somewhat familiar, it’s because this is the same engine powering the C450 AMG or the GLE450 AMG Coupé that we know all too well.

As a consequence, the dynamic performances of the S400 Coupé 4MATIC don’t sound too shabby: the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint takes just 5.6 seconds, and top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). Power from the V6 engine is hurled towards all four wheels via the 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system and a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission.

In Germany, the new model comes pretty well equipped as standard, having two-zone automatic climate control, LED Intelligent Light System, the COMAND Online multimedia system, AIRMATIC pneumatic suspension, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS and Mercedes-Benz’s proprietary PRE-SAFE system.

While there’s no way around the fact that this is now the cheapest S-Class Coupé version, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t make tons of sense. After all, it’s a more affordable way of owning a great car. The V6 S-Class Coupé is already available for order in Germany, but there's no word on whether or when it will make it onto other markets.
