Mercedes-Benz Releases First SLS AMG Roadster Video

Everybody already knew what it was going to look like, but they were still thoroughly impressed when Mercedes Benz finally took the wraps of the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster, the German automaker’s fastest drop-top. After we showed you a number of excellent shots of the poser-oriented supercar, we can now reveal it in action on the road.

Power for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster comes from the 6.3-liter V8 front-mid engine making 563 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque in the case of the European version, with the US model adding 8 more ponies. The unit is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transaxle transmission and a sports suspension with aluminum double wishbones.

The Adaptive AMG Sport Suspension with electronically controlled damping is available as an option and allows the damping characteristics to be modified at the touch of a button. Using the AMG DRIVE UNIT, the driver of the SLS AMG Roadster is able to pick from three different suspension modes including Comfort, Sport and Sport plus.

“Systematic lightweight construction, outstanding performance and a breathtaking design combined with sensuous open-air driving pleasure – the new SLS AMG Roadster perfectly embodies the AMG philosophy of German engineering and craftsmanship,” said Ola Kallenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “The gullwing model has already thrilled sports car fans all over the world, and now the convertible version is bound to cause a sensation.”

Most importantly for all the convertible fans that the rain caught by surprise, Mercedes-Benz says that the fabric soft-top of the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster opens and closes in just 11 seconds and can be operated on the move at speeds of up to 31 mph (50 km/h).

Prices for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster will be announced closer to launch date.
