With the help of a gasoline/natural gas bivalent engine, the newly-launched Mercedes-Benz E 200 Natural Gas Drive is one of the most both fuel efficient and friendly towards tree-huggers version of the E-Class family.
Since the four-cylinder can run on both gasoline and natural gas, the vehicle's main advantages are its much lower driving costs and being a bit kinder to the environment when running on natural gas. If you're driving 20,000 kilometers (12427 miles) per year, Germany's current fuel costs would save you more than 1000 Euros a year.
Another huge perk of the bivalent drive system is the E 200 NGD total driving range, since the car uses two tanks. The natural gas tank can provide more than 400 km (248.5 miles) of driving range by itself, but when it gets depleted the engine automatically switches to gasoline, providing another 900 km (559.2 miles) of range. If that doesn't float your boat enough, with the optional 80 liter petrol tank the total driving range can reach a staggering 1600 kilometers (994.2 miles).
The second fuel efficient E-Class model launched is also the most economical in the entire range. The E 220 BlueEfficiency Edition is optimized for fuel consumption but without sacrificing neither comfort nor performance.
We are talking about a four-cylinder diesel that only uses 4.4 liters of fuel for every 100 km/h (53.4 mpg). The 170 hp engine provides a massive 400 Nm (295 ft lb), while the car's 0-100 km/h (62 mph) stint only takes 8.4 seconds.
Since this is the BlueEfficiency Edition, the model has low-rolling resistance tires, a 15 millimeter lowered chassis and a radiator blind that can automatically divert air flow to improve aerodynamics when engine cooling is not required.
Both two new engines are already Euro 6 and A+ efficiency class compliant (the E 200 NGD has a B efficiency class when using petrol). As usual, you can combine the special models with any equipment line that's available in the E-Class range.
