Mercedes-Benz have just released new information on their B200 Natural Gas Drive, which is basically a petrol-powered B200 which will be factory-converted to run on natural gas. It has a 156 hp engine, uses only 4.2 l/100km (67 UK mpg) and only emits 115 g/km CO2 - also, the rest of the stuff coming out of the back is considerably cleaner than that of regular petrol engines.
Its tank can hold 125 liters of compressed natural gas, which equates to 21 kg in mass. With a full tank, it is capable of traveling some 500 km, without having to resort to burning gasoline - it has a 12 liter petrol tank which is used ‘for emergencies’. Furthermore, with a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 9.1 seconds, its performance is more than adequate, and above the class average. In this day and age of hybrids, EVs and hydrogen, we tend to forget that there is still a lot of natural gas we can still burn - it is considerably cleaner and cheaper than petrol and, most importantly, it doesn’t make the vehicle a pain to run, as it takes very little time to fill up the tank and with economy figures comparable to those achieved by petrol cars, the frequency of visits to the pump remains the same - we say Mercedes-Benz are onto a winner.
