A niche that pretty much no one had probably envisioned a couple of decades ago is about to become a little more crowded thanks to the production version of the Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV, which was unveiled at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show earlier today.
While counting its access doors and having a peek at the thread on those 22-inch sports tires wouldn't necessarily make a normal person think of SUVs and coupes in the same sentence, BMW has already made everything possible to convince people that such a type of car exists. Long story short, now Mercedes-Benz wants to jump on the coupe SUV with five doors band wagon as well.
The Concept Coupe SUV previews an upcoming sixth model in the Mercedes-Benz future SUV line-up, and it will apparently be the first of many. According to the press release, the five models in the current off-road line (GLA, GLK, G-Class, GL-Class, M-Class) will be complemented by an “on-road line” in the future, which should also include a BMW X4 competitor in around three years time.
“Sensual as a coupé – visionary as an SUV,” says Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz, about the model's design.
“The Concept Coupé SUV stands out thanks to its extreme proportions and in doing so interprets our hallmark Mercedes coupé design idiom perfectly. With its superior sportiness it conveys a sense of modern luxury and aesthetic aspirations of sensual clarity.” Wagener continues.
Obviously, most people only see a BMW X6 interpreted by Mercedes-Benz, but there are plenty of different design details between to the two models on a closer look.
Our favorite feature is most definitely the addition of frameless doors, which gives the Concept SUV a touch of class that the BMW X6 currently lacks.
Set to sport the MLC moniker, the production version of the Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV is expected to be unveiled at the 2015 North American International Auto Show, in Detroit. Just like the M-Class, GL-Class and now the C-Class, the MLC will be manufactured at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, starting from 2015.
