About ten to fifteen years ago, buying a car that could accelerate from naught to 100 km/h (62 mph) in well under five seconds usually meant that you would get an all-out sports car that doesn't have the same benefits of your average family econobox.
We are in 2014 now, and the hot hatch market has grown exponentially, making way for some pretty amazing cars to appear in the last couple of years.
The Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG is by far the hottest of the hot hatches, its 4.6 seconds needed to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standing start making it a faster than a BMW M5 E60.
The A 45 AMG is so fast, as a matter of fact, that it currently doesn't have a single direct competitor – at least until the new Audi RS3 arrives.
The Germans from AutoBild are well aware about the model's lack of true competitors from BMW and Audi, at least in terms of power and size, so they pitted the AMG hatch against the next best thing: the Audi TT RS Plus.
Both models have 360 hp engines, with the Audi having slightly more torque - thanks to one extra cylinder and 0.5 liters of displacement. Combined wit the lower weight, the Ingolstadt coupe jumps the A 45 AMG in terms of acceleration figures, but the AutoBild editors chose the Stuttgart model as the overall winner of the comparison. Not a bad read if you know German.
