Mercedes is finally launching its own competitor for the premium car madness that is the Sports Activity Coupe segment. It's called the GLE Coupe and will debut at the Detroit Auto Show. We know that, but what we didn't know is the AMG version will be shown as well.
This next video was just uploaded to Facebook by Mercedes-Benz and there's no doubt about it, this is the GLE 63 Coupe from the Mercedes-AMG division. It's big, it's brash and it's full of mystery – everything we need to get excited about a car.

As a direct rival to the new X6 M, the GLE 63 Coupe will have a tough job on its hands. BMW has had two generations to figure out how to get a truck to act like a sportscar, while Mercedes' outgoing ML 63 AMG remains a disappointment.

4.0 or 5.5 – the V8 dilemma

Mercedes officials have previously said they will stop using the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 for its AMG models. But we can't help but notice the 4-liter that many say will replace it doesn't have enough oomph. In the C63 and the GT sportscar, this delivers a maximum of 510 hp 700 Nm. That's nowhere near the 575 hp and 750 (553 lb-ft) achieved by the BMW X6 M.

When has Mercedes ever gone to war against BMW with a smaller engine and less power? Never.

We'll find out for sure what engine Mercedes used when the GLE 63 Coupe will premiere in Detroit at 2015 NAIAS.

Editor's note: Totally subjectively speaking, I'm so in love with this car. It's as elegant as the S-Coupe and as brutish as the first CLS.
