Lucid opened the AMP-2, its second production facility, in Saudi Arabia on September 27 and is moving fast to monetize the hype with a limited edition sold in the country. Lucid Air "Kingdom Dream Edition" is an ultra-exclusive variant of the Air Dream Edition, with only 93 examples available to order.
Lucid Motors was once considered one of the most promising EV startups, and many thought it would give Tesla a run for its money. Despite some of the most advanced EV technology, which some believe is even better than Tesla's, Lucid has struggled to stay afloat for the past year. It barely managed thanks to selling its drive units and other components to other OEMs, including Aston Martin, but what really kept it from sinking has been Saudi Arabia PIF's money.

The private investment fund owned by the Saudi Arabian government owns about 62% of Lucid Motors and, understandably, doesn't want to see its investment go up in smoke. The Saudis have doubled down on Lucid ever since the hardship struck and are now convinced that the startup is instrumental in helping them create a national car industry. To fulfill this dream, Lucid Motors had to open a production facility in the Kingdom, a checkbox Lucid marked on September 27.

Saudi Arabia has big EV ambitions, including establishing its own EV brand, Ceer, but for now, the Lucid production facility will only assemble cars using kits imported from the US. About 5,000 vehicles per year will be assembled initially. The AMP-2 (short for Advanced Manufacturing Plant 2) production facility in Jeddah will reach its full capacity of 155,000 units per year "after the middle of the decade."

Lucid announced an ultra-exclusive edition of the Air sedan to celebrate the factory opening and honor Saudi Arabia's 93rd National Day. That's why the Air Kingdom Dream Edition will only be available in 93 examples. Based on the Air Dream Edition trim, the Kingdom Dream Edition features distinctive green accents on badges and throughout the car. Customers will be able to choose from the standard color palette of gold, black, white, and red.

According to Faisal Sultan, Lucid Group's vice president and managing director for the Middle East, several government officials and private parties "have expressed keen interest" in acquiring these exclusive vehicles. Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih announced publicly that he was the first to place an order. Lucid expects the limited-edition Air units to be available by the end of the year, if not sooner.

The pricing for the Air Kingdom Dream Edition has not been made public. Of course, if you absolutely need to know, you're probably not rich enough to afford the limited-edition Lucid Air. The standard Dream Edition starts at 878,600 SAR, translating to about $234,000 at current conversion rates. That's pretty steep already, considering you can buy the sporty Air Sapphire in the US for $249,000. It will be interesting to see how the new Saudi Arabia plant will help Lucid move more cars in the fourth quarter.
